We heard him say, "They're two dudes!" Then an older woman came out with him, all uncomfortable smiles, and wished us a pleasant stay. "Show them the room, Nick," she told the boy, "and carry their bags for them."

The room was gorgeous—a suite, with a Jacuzzi big enough for eight just a hop, skip and a jump away from the bed. "Can I get you anything?" the boy asked nervously and politely.

"No thank you," Jamie said. "We can take care of ourselves."

I was in a wicked mood. "And of each other," I added, and I gave Jamie a kiss in front of the flustered teenager. A real kiss, tongues and all; not just a peck on the cheek.

Nick made a dash for it. I called him back. "Don't you want your tip?" I gave him a twenty. He'd earned it.

"Do you mean to make a spectacle of us for the next two weeks?" Jamie asked.

"Not as much of a spectacle as you make as a stripper. I'm taking you country dancing tonight after the prime rib, but you can keep your clothes on."

"And we'll dance together, no doubt."

"Every last song."

"Aren't you afraid of getting bashed? This is redneck country."

"It's tourist country. I'm sick of hiding and looking over my back every time I take a step. From now until we go home, we're gonna breathe free and be ourselves."

"Okay. I'm game."

"And what I just said about keeping your clothes on… Only when we go dancing."

"You really are asking to be fucked, aren't you?"

"What? Didn't you believe me?"

Partnering with Jamie on the dance floor—and I was already considering partnering with him for life— raised a few eyebrows, but Jamie's dancing also elicited more than a little applause, and they clapped even more when we kissed. And when we made love back at the motel, I pretty much made up my mind I wanted him for a lifetime partner.
